Claude Sonnet 5 launches with lower token prices

Anthropic releases Sonnet 5 across Claude plans and the API, with effort settings for longer agent tasks.

By Chat Overview Published Updated

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30, 2026. The model focused on planning, tool use, coding, and tasks that continue across several actions.

Effort controls for different workloads

Sonnet 5 offered different effort levels for balancing the depth of work against response time and token use. Anthropic reported improvements over Sonnet 4.6 in its reasoning, search, and computer-use evaluations. The release brought more of those capabilities into the lower-priced Sonnet range.

Claude plans and the API

Sonnet 5 became the default model for Free and Pro plans and was available on Max, Team, and Enterprise. API pricing started at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The API model name was claude-sonnet-5.

The launch also increased rate limits across Claude's chat, work, coding, and platform products to accommodate higher-effort tasks.
