Codeium launches the Windsurf editor with Cascade
Windsurf combines an AI coding assistant with an editor that follows codebase changes and supports multi-file work.
Codeium launched the Windsurf editor on November 13, 2024. The release added a standalone editor to the company's autocomplete, chat, and search extension.
Cascade works across the codebase
Cascade combined knowledge of the repository with the actions taking place in the editor. It supported work across files, while the editor also offered predictions of multi-cursor edits and the next file to change. The launch included inline chat and assistance with lint errors and selected code.
A standalone editor
Windsurf was available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with free access at launch. That put the assistant and editor into one application, rather than relying solely on an extension inside another development environment.
The release introduced the Windsurf product under Codeium's existing company and product history. The provider profile follows that history through its later ownership and naming changes.
