Cognition agrees to acquire Windsurf
The agreement brings Windsurf's editor, intellectual property, brand, and business to the company behind Devin.
Cognition signed an agreement to acquire Windsurf, the AI coding editor that grew out of Codeium. The announced deal includes Windsurf's intellectual property, product, trademark, brand, business, and remaining team.
Editor and agent work under one company
Windsurf provides an editor for interactive coding with AI assistance. Cognition's Devin handles delegated software-development tasks. The acquisition brings those two workflows into the same company without making them the same product at the time of the announcement.
Cognition said Windsurf's team would continue operating as before in the immediate term. It also outlined plans to invest in bringing Windsurf's capabilities into its wider product range over the following months.
What the announcement means for existing use
The deal establishes a new owner and a direction for product development. It does not, by itself, describe a completed migration of every account or a new combined subscription. Existing editor use and delegated agent work still have different setup and workflow considerations.
The Codeium / Windsurf profile retains the older name and route, and explains the current desktop product, documentation, and plans.
