Cohere launches Command R for document-based answers
Command R pairs a 128K context window with retrieval and tool use, with hosted access and research weights.
Cohere introduced Command R, a language model designed for applications that answer questions using retrieved documents and external tools. The release supports a 128,000-token context window and generation across ten languages.
Answers connected to company information
Retrieval-augmented generation gives a model relevant documents alongside a question. Command R was designed to work with Cohere's Embed and Rerank services, which help find and order those documents before an answer is generated. Tool use adds a route for an application to call external functions instead of relying only on a text response.
These features are particularly relevant to document search, support systems, and assistants that need information beyond a model's training data.
Hosted service and research release
Command R became available through Cohere's hosted application programming interface (API). The company also released weights for research and evaluation, giving teams a separate route to experiment with the model. The Cohere profile covers model access, retrieval services, and usage-based billing.
