GitHub opens Copilot coding agent in public preview
Copilot can work on assigned issues in a GitHub-hosted environment and return changes in a pull request.
GitHub opened Copilot coding agent in public preview for Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise subscribers. An assigned issue starts work in a cloud development environment powered by GitHub Actions. The agent explores the repository, changes files, and runs available tests and linters before preparing a pull request.
From an issue to a reviewable change
The workflow moves beyond suggestions in an editor:
- Assign an issue describing a bounded change.
- Follow the work in the agent session and draft pull request.
- Review the diff and request further changes through comments.
GitHub described low-to-medium complexity work in well-tested repositories as a good starting point, including bug fixes, documentation, and test improvements. The resulting change still goes through the repository's review process.
Access and usage
Enterprise access required an administrator to enable the coding-agent policy. The announcement tied the service to GitHub Actions usage and said premium-request charging would begin on June 4, 2025. Those were the preview's launch terms, rather than a permanent description of every Copilot plan.
The GitHub Copilot profile covers current editor assistance, agent workflows, and billing.
