Kimi K2 Thinking adds reasoning between tool calls
Moonshot releases a thinking version of K2, with downloadable weights, API access, and an initial chat mode.
Moonshot AI released Kimi K2 Thinking on November 6, 2025. The model extended K2 with reasoning between tool calls for tasks such as research, coding, and writing.
Thinking while using tools
The release combined a thinking model with support for longer sequences of actions. Its evaluations used tools such as search, code execution, and web browsing. The model weights were available through Hugging Face , alongside hosted API access.
Chat access before the full agent mode
K2 Thinking was also available in Kimi's chat mode at launch. Moonshot said that chat used a subset of the tools and fewer tool-call turns than its full evaluations. The fuller agent mode was planned to follow.
The release therefore offered several access routes, with the surrounding tools affecting what work the model could carry out in each one.
