By Chat Overview Published Updated

Meta released Llama 4 Scout and Maverick on April 5, 2025. The downloadable models introduced native multimodal processing and a mixture-of-experts architecture to the Llama family.

Two released models

Both models used 17 billion active parameters, with Scout using 16 experts and Maverick 128. Scout offered a ten-million-token context window, expanding the amount of material a request could include.

The weights became available through llama.com and Hugging Face . Meta also began offering Llama 4 through Meta AI in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct, and its website.

Behemoth remained a preview

The announcement described a larger teacher model, Llama 4 Behemoth, but did not release it for download. It was still in training.

Scout and Maverick were the usable releases on announcement day; the larger model described Meta's continuing development work.
