GPT-4o begins rolling out with text and image support

OpenAI brings GPT-4o to free ChatGPT accounts and the API, with new voice capabilities scheduled for a later rollout.

By Chat Overview Published Updated

OpenAI announced GPT-4o on May 13, 2024, and began rolling out its text and image capabilities in ChatGPT. The model also became available through the application programming interface (API) for text and vision requests.

Wider access in ChatGPT

GPT-4o reached the free ChatGPT tier, with higher message limits for Plus subscribers. This widened access to image interpretation as well as text conversations.

OpenAI announced API pricing at half the price of GPT-4 Turbo, alongside higher rate limits. That changed the cost of applications sending text and images to a hosted model.

Voice followed a separate rollout

The demonstrations included real-time speech and other multimodal interactions, but those capabilities were not all publicly available on launch day. OpenAI planned a new Voice Mode alpha for Plus subscribers in the following weeks. New audio and video API capabilities were initially planned for a small group of partners.
