GPT-5 brings automatic reasoning selection to ChatGPT
OpenAI introduces a GPT-5 system that routes between faster replies and deeper reasoning in ChatGPT.
OpenAI introduced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025. In ChatGPT, the release combined a faster model, a deeper reasoning model, and a router that selected between them according to the request.
Different levels of reasoning
The system used the task's complexity, required tools, and explicit instructions to determine when to spend more time thinking. That brought ordinary questions and more demanding reasoning into one ChatGPT experience. The announcement covered improvements in coding, writing, and handling questions where an answer was uncertain.
Access across ChatGPT plans
GPT-5 was introduced for all ChatGPT accounts. Plus subscribers received higher usage limits, while Pro accounts added GPT-5 Pro for more extended reasoning. A smaller version handled requests after the main model's allowance was exhausted.
The release changed how model selection worked in ChatGPT, while plan limits still determined the amount of access available.
