xAI releases Grok 4 with tool use and search
Grok 4 adds native tool use, hosted API access, and a separate Heavy subscription tier.
xAI released Grok 4 with native tool use and real-time search integration. The model became available to SuperGrok and Premium+ subscribers and through xAI's application programming interface (API).
Tools alongside reasoning
The release trains the model to use capabilities such as a code interpreter and web browsing during a task. Search can draw on the web and information from X, rather than relying only on knowledge stored during training.
That is relevant to research questions and other tasks needing current information, where the model needs to decide what to look up before responding.
Different access options
xAI also introduced SuperGrok Heavy for access to Grok 4 Heavy. The subscription offering and API route serve different needs: one provides an assistant interface, while the other supports applications sending model requests. The xAI profile covers those access routes and the company's current model services.
