Perplexity
A research application and developer APIs for web search, grounded answers, agents, and model routing.
- Search and answer workflows backed by web retrieval
- Separate router, agent, search, and embedding APIs
- Developer usage billed separately from app subscriptions
Perplexity offers a research application alongside a developer API platform. The platform separates web search, agent work, model routing, and embeddings instead of treating them as one endpoint.
Choosing an API
Use search when an application needs retrieved results, or an answer and agent workflow when it needs model-generated research output. The router provides model access, while embeddings support retrieval-related applications. The current documentation also describes migration paths for older Sonar integrations.
How pricing works
Billing depends on the API: model tokens, search requests, or the tools and steps used in a research task. Developer API credits and limits are separate from consumer application subscriptions. Check the selected endpoint's charges before comparing a simple search with a longer agent run.
